Dollar Sales Up 11
Percent for First Half of 2008
Boulder, CO •
July 28, 2008 – The
Brewers Association,
the trade association representing the majority of U.S. brewing companies,
reports beer sales from American craft brewers (see
2007 Craft Beer Industry Statistics) continue to grow despite a
softening economy and challenges with raw materials supply and pricing.
Craft beer dollar sales during the first half of 2008 increased 11% compared
to this same period in 2007. The Brewers Association attributes this growth
to a grassroots movement toward fuller flavored, small batch beers made by
independent craft brewers.
According to The
Nielsen Company, beer sales are affected the least by the economic downturn,
with wine sales showing the most impact. Additionally, craft beer is gaining
customers from across all segments of beverage alcohol.
The Brewers Association
reports that in the first half of 2008 volume of beer sold by craft brewers
grew by 6.5% totaling an estimated 4 million barrels of beer compared to
3.768 million barrels sold in the first half of 2007. Harry Schumacher of
Beer Business Daily stated, "Crafts have really taken pricing this year
given high input costs, and yet it is still driving volume gains faster than
the beer category."

What
is Mead Day?
Mead Day, organized by the
American Homebrewers
Association (AHA), is a national event to help increase camaraderie among
homebrewers (see
What is Homebrewing?) and meadmakers (see
What is Mead?) and to
introduce or reintroduce the meadmaking hobby.
It’s honeywine time again!
Raise a glass with friends and toast this ancient and traditional beverage on
August 2 – Mead
Day.
What is Mead? To put it
simply, mead is a fermented beverage made from honey which is sometimes referred
to as "honey wine."
Plausibly humankind's first
fermented beverage, mead has evolved and expanded its range through the
millennia to include other fermentables such as fruit and malt as well as
various flavorings such as herbs and spices.
Brewers often make a malt
and honey mead known as "braggot" or "bracket." To learn more about mead try the
Compleat Meadmaker by Ken Schramm. The author takes you through
the steps to make your first batch. For understanding the history of mead check
out the chapter The Mead of Inspiration: Mead, Honey and Heather from Stephen
Harrod Buhner’s book

On November 21, 2008,
several of your favorite yeast ranchers will walk 60 miles over the course of
three days.
It's for an event called
the Breast Cancer 3-Day, which benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the
National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
Without a cure, one in
eight women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer. That's
why Lisa White, Ashley Paulsworth, JoAnne Carilli-Stevenson, Meg Falbo and
Stefanie Wacker have committed to walking the 3-Day.
The team name is Beer for
Boobs. All the ladies (and maybe some dudes) who will be a part of this team
think we should live long enough for our boobies to enjoy all the great beer in
this world. What a cause, right?
Finally, you can also
donate online at
www.The3Day.org. Or click
here for a direct link to the Beer for Boobs team page to make a donation.
You can donate to any of the team members on Beer for Boobs.
